Update all your Adobe stuff! (flash, reader, etc.).  They’ve had some of the most serious security holes  in their software in the last year or two.

Hackers

Helpful Hints, Warnings | Posted by Dennis October 17th, 2010

Did you know that hackers from all over the planet are trying to get in to your equipment almost CONSTANTLY? If you don’t believe me, check your router logs. Fortunately the service providers do a fair job of monitoring, but there are lots of things you can do to keep from getting hacked. 1) Anti-virus 2) Firewalls 3) Updates 4) Strong passwords just to name a few.

i-pads

News | Posted by Dennis October 16th, 2010

Ok, so there’s been a lot of hoopla about the new i-pads, and I just HAVE to say that yes, they’re kinda cool and fun, but this kind of device has been around awhile. Tablet PC’s have bee here since early this century, and ipad users have stated that “it’s like an oversized iphone”.

FCC

News | Posted by Dennis October 8th, 2010

For the first time in many years, the FCC is going to open another set of frequencies, designated Super Wi-fi. This will be really good to help open competition for the 3G and 4G networks for which the big carriers are currently charging exorbitant prices, and should help free up bandwidth on those networks.  The performance of the new standard look promising, with range greater than 1 mile and speeds in excess of 10 Mbps.  But the biggest advantage may be its ability to penetrate walls and other infrastructure.  Dell, Microsoft, and some other big players are already slated to develop under this new standard and I’d expect to see new devices/services cropping up within the next 12-15 months.

Don’t panic

Helpful Hints, Warnings | Posted by Dennis October 5th, 2010

If you get attacked while surfing (e.g. a window pops up saying you are infected – that IS the infection!) Just press CTRL-ALT-DEL and run task manager. Click on every browser window that’s open and choose END TASK. I’ve had this happen several times from Google results.

So if you have a blog, and want it Tweeted or Facebooked automatically, the secret is to use Twitterfeed. Note that you MUST have an RSS feed enabled to do this.

Sage Advice

Warnings | Posted by Dennis October 3rd, 2010

Ok, so this is something all my friends, family, and clients need to know: I clean up virus/trojan/malware attacks every day. Lately, the vast majority are coming from the social networking pages like MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube. Maybe you caught the irony – check out all the icons below for a complete list of such sites LOL. Anyway, there are some standard things you can do to prevent getting “infected”. 1) MAKE SURE you have good virus protection! 2) NEVER click on stuff from people you don’t know/trust (i.e. don’t take candy from strangers!) and 3) keep your browsers and software up-to-date. But here’s a special one: If you like to check YouTube videos often, WATCH OUT FOR FRESH ONES!! If the video has only been up for an hour, it could be an infected one that some hacker has dropped. I’ve caught ’em doing this with infected videos for about an hour, then they take ’em down to keep from getting caught

I’ve been reading up on the latest features and best practices for Word, and I ‘ve only just now realized that most people I know aren’t using the program the way it was intended (myself included!). As it turns out, in order to REALLY enjoy the power and ease of use that Word can provide, you MUST use Styles. They’re the big buttons on the right of the main menu on Word 2007 and 2010. Before you begin any document, decide how you would like the Titles, subtitles, normal text, etc. to look, and adjust the styles accordingly. There are lots of articles out there to step you through this. After you’re done, be religious about ALWAYS using one of your styles, and lots of magical things happen in word. You’ll be able to auto-generate a Table of Contents, just for starters.
